Recruit Experienced Professionals
Most of the time, church planters do not have sufficient background or experience to set up or run these businesses. They’ve rightly spent most of their time honing skills useful for building a church up from “ground zero.” It is then a daunting task to quickly learn how to do business in an environment where it’s most challenging to do so due to corruption, political and social unrest, or weak economies. What we’ve found is that by recruiting people who have experience to come alongside them—whether it’s experience relating to international governments or simply being an entrepreneur for a number of years—the church planting teams become stronger and are able to take on this work.
Business Directors Program
The business director program aims to link skilled businessmen and women with church planting teams in the 10/40 window, forming a team of experts both in business and ministry.
Legitimacy and sustainability are key goals for any of these overseas businesses. To reach these goals, a significant amount of time must be invested in the business. As we’ve considered the situation, we argue that the most strategic move for the church planting team at this point in time is to recruit business directors.
This is not a new concept. Already there are Business Directors in the 10/40 window who provide significant support to their teams through their business jobs. They bring the wealth of their experience (often 20+ years) to bear on their mission-minded businesses. Their experience lends their entire team credibility as it makes sense to locals that such an individual would be involved in business in their country. They are both a catalyst to and a collaborator with the team—providing leadership for the business while supporting the overarching goal of planting churches.

Pro Bono Consulting Teams
One of the challenges in the past has been that missions have been seen as the exclusive domain of those who are on the ministry or seminary track. Today, this is not the case. We need more and more people who have a background and experience in business and thus partner with church planting teams to help them be successful in implementing Business-as-Mission.
Through stateside projects and on-site visits, business men and women can lend their expertise by donating their time to participate in one of our phase projects. Pro bono consulting teams are formed within local churches around the nation.
